One of the most renowned English musicians, John Bull was undoubtedly the greatest organist and composer of his time. At a very young age Bull was appointed the organist in his native Hereford. By the age 20 Bull was promoted to the positions of Gentleman of the Royal Chapel, and then organist of the Royal Chapel. Bull was named the chief musician of Prince Henry, the most coveted position in English music. In 1613, Bull unexpectedly left England to settle in Belgium, accepting the position at the Anvers Cathedral. Bull was the first known theoretician in music. Bull’s works are still among the most demanding organ music ever published. 'Dr. Bull' – as he signed his works, was one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance music.
