A distinguished Russian pianist, conductor and compositor, Vaslily Kalinnikov was forced to earn a living by playing the bassoon, timpani and violin in theatre orchestras because the poverty of his family would not allow him to become a student of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1892, at the recommendation of Tchaikovsky, Kalinnikov was appointed a conductor at the Malïy Theatre in Moscow and later a conductor of Moscow Italian Theatre. Kalinnikov’s compositions had an enormous immediate success: his First and Second symphonies were performed in Kiev, Moscow, Vienna and Berlin bringing the composer an international recognition.
