A distinguished Italian composer of the Roman School, Gregorio Allegri was also a singer and a priest. Gregorio Allegri studied with the mastro di capella Giovanni Bernardino Nanino. Allegri composed a great number of motets which were highly regarded by the church and especially by Pope Urban VIII. Gregorio Allegri was one of the first composers for stringed instruments and was the author of the first string quartet. Gregorio Allegriís compositions for the Sistine Chapel are the example of the Palestrina style.
