Gabriel Pierne
1863 - 1937
Gabriel Pierne short biography
Called ‘the most complete French musician of the late Romantic/early 20th century era’, Gabriel Pierne was one of the most respected composers, conductors and organists of his generation. In his own compositions Gabriel Pierne combined a seriousness of purpose (obtained through his studies with César Franck) with a lighter, popular flavor attributed to Jules Massenet who was Pierné’s composition teacher. Perne’s complete devotion to the contemporary French composers secured him a reputation as a conductor of deep integrity. In 1925 Gabriel Pierne was elected to the Académie des Beaux Arts and later was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. The Place Gabriel Pierné in Paris is named for him.
