A noted Spanish musician and poet, Luis Milan performed on and wrote music for the vihuela, a predecessor of the modern guitar. The vihuela had 6 courses of strings and was a very important instrument in the 16th century Spain. In 1536, Milan wrote and published Libro de musica de vihuela de mano intitulado El Maestro. This work is known as the example of Spanish tablature.
