Considered as the most versatile and accomplished of all operetta composers, Franz von Suppe was not destined to become a musician. Suppe studied law in Padua, but in 1835 he went to Vienna where he began his professional music studies. Suppe’s first great success came in 1841 with Jung lustig, im Alter traurig. In 1845, Suppe was appointed a conductor at the Theater an der Wien, a post he kept for 17 years. Suppe’s one-act Das Pensionatis considered the first Viennese operetta.
