Niccolo Piccinni (Piccini)
1728 – 1800
Niccolo Piccinni was one of the most popular composers of opera of his generation. Born in Bari, Piccinni studied with Leonardo Leo and Francesco Durante at the S. Onofrio Conservatory. Piccinni's first opera, Le donne dispettose, was staged in 1755. In 1760 Piccinni composed La Cecchina, ossia la buona Figliuola, an opera buffa which was staged with enormous success in all European capitals. In 1784 Piccinni became professor at the Royal School of Music. Piccinni worked with all the greatest librettists, including Metastasio.
